Measuring the strike weight for prand hammers
Measuring the strike weight for grand hammers. This 1980's Beale grand had a downweight in the high range  (anywhere from 50-60 grams per note). The hammer strike weight was also in the high end of the range (upwards of 12.5 to 13 grams). This all made the piano feel too heavy to play with not much control for the pianist. After taking all the data on each note (downweight, upweight, hammer strike weight) it was decided to remove wood from the hammers. The piano was previously regulated to rule out any other problems before taking this next step.
The photos below show hammer tapering using a table saw and jig, removing wood from underside of each hammer using a router. After removing up to 1 gram from each hammer this reduced the downweight by around 5 grams. This had a dramatic effect on the way the action feels and plays. More even, more control!
